Internship Sustainability and Asset Allocation

Do you have a broad interest in politics, economics and social issues and are you eager to research the implications of the shift in asset management towards sustainable on the asset allocation decision making process? Then we are looking for you! In a consultant-type of internship, you will have the opportunity to get a wide exposure within Aegon and you will be able to present your findings at the end to a large stakeholder group.

The job in a nutshell

Globally, we observe a movement that prioritises responsible, sustainable, green and fair over traditional corporate values. The asset management industry is no exception to this shift. Over the last few years, we have seen a lot of asset managers introducing “sustainable” or “green” funds, arguing that it is a ‘win-win’: better for the world in which we live and better for the investment results.

Such a paradigm shift within the industry gives rise to many new questions and ideas that are worth exploring in detail. At Aegon Asset Management we are particularly interested in the relevance of sustainable investments for making the right asset allocation decisions. For instance: “What implications do sustainable factors have on making good asset allocation decisions?”, “How can a focus on sustainable investments help us in better managing the risks within a portfolio?” “Is there an optimum of “green” investments in a multi asset portfolio?”

We are looking for a candidate at the beginning of her career because that will help in bridging the gap between the new, modern developments regarding sustainability and the, still largely traditional, asset management industry on the other hand. Ideally, you are having a real interest in both the numerous sustainability developments, as well as in finance and economics.

The internship is a consultancy assignment in which you will need to check with various Aegon departments what knowledge and research is already available on the topics of sustainability and asset allocation. Next, you are responsible forf conducting your own research, for instance by using the academic literature and practitioners’ research, in order to prepare a final report which you will present to a large group of key stakeholders, such as managers, investors, analysts, HR and ESG experts. Hence, an open mind and taking initiative are valued for this job. You will be assisted throughout the research by the Multi-Assetteam and its members will be more than willing to help you succeed in your journey.

This is your future position, because you:

  • Are in the final phase of your bachelor or master.
  • Can join us from February / March 2021 for 3-4 months, 2-5 days per week.
  • Are portrayed as someone who is independent and is willing to take the initiative.
  • Have a broad interest in both the numerous relevant sustainability topics, as well as how they interact with asset allocation decision making.

Important note:

It is required to be enrolled at a university to take part in this internship. Next to that you will need a Dutch BSN-number and Dutch bank account. If you are a non EU/EER student, you will need a valid residence permit stating that you may work ('arbeid vrij toegestaan'). Applications that do not fulfill this criteria cannot be taken into consideration.

Who will be your new colleagues?

You will be working within the multi-asset team, located at the office in The Hague.

Tim Sterk from that team will be assisting you during the project so that you will succeed in your journey.

What will you be getting?

  • An internship allowance of €500 based on 40 hours a week;
  • A personal laptop from the office you can borrow during your internship;
  • Personal guidance by one of our professionals;
  • Free membership at Young Aegon;
